NOW OPEN: LOOSEYS DELIVERS A BOOZE-SOAKED, GREASE-STAINED LOVE LETTER TO NEW YORK’S LOWER EAST SIDE TO HONG KONG
Black Sheep opens Looseys this week in SoHo, a down-and-dirty tribute to the bodegas and dive bars of New York’s Lower East Side.
This one is personal. Chef Josh Stumbaugh and writer Nate Erickson — two former New Yorkers with the city’s tap water still running through their veins — came up with Looseys as a way to bring that corner store chaos, that neighbourhood grit, that feeling of being taken care of day or night, straight to Hong Kong.
To make it real, they called in a little help from their friends: Jeff Bell, America’s best bartender (P.D.T. New York, Cocteleria Mixteca, Crif Dogs), shook up the perfect lineup of dive bar cocktails — think Bloody Marys, Micheladas and more — and Chef Matthew Kirkley set aside his nine MICHELIN star pedigree to fire hot dogs, Italian heroes and chopped cheeses that taste exactly like the city that never sleeps.
Together, they have stitched up their own misfit shrine where tallboys come in brown bags, sandwiches are wrapped in wax paper and the roller dogs never stop spinning. Equal parts grime and generosity, Looseys’ doors are open, its lights shining bright, with a seat at the counter for anyone who needs it.
