The Court Of Master Sommeliers

Founded in 1977, the Court of Master Sommeliers raises the bar for service worldwide. It is about knowledge as much as it is about hospitality, and the ability to guide a guest through a journey that feels effortless.

There are four levels:

  • Introductory: Foundations in wine regions and service
  • Certified: Theory, blind tasting and live service
  • Advanced: A deep dive for sommeliers at the top of their craft
  • Master: The highest level a Sommelier can achieve

This October, our very own Baptiste has officially earned the title of Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, a mark of sharp theory, confident blind tasting and polished service. And second, Harnil has passed his Service examination, one-third of the way to his Master Sommelier certification — the rarest pin in the wine world and a summit reached by just a little over 300 people on earth.

Each level demands thousands of hours of study, practice and humility.

At Black Sheep, our Sommeliers take curiosity and turn it into craft. On the floor each night, they tell stories through glass and bottle, knowing when to speak, when to pour and how to transform each vintage into a moment.

When one rises, the entire team stands taller. And when two rise, well, we think that is worth an extra special toast. So here is to Harnil, to Baptiste, and to the long, worthy road of mastery. May your next pour be your best yet.
