For three nights only, one of America’s most celebrated taquerias is coming to Hong Kong. From 15 to 17 July, Los Angeles cult favorite Tacos 1986 takes over Taqueria Super Macho on Bridges Street, with founders Jorge “Joy” Alvarez-Tostado and Victor Delgado flying in to recreate the fire, flavor, and electric energy that made their Tijuana-style tacos a coast-to-coast phenomenon.
Having grown from a Hollywood street stand into a national name with locations across Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York, Tacos 1986 has become one of North America’s most celebrated institutions, built around a simple philosophy: handmade tortillas, quality ingredients, and tacos served con todo (“with everything”). This exclusive three-day takeover offers Hong Kong a rare opportunity to experience it firsthand.
For the founders, tacos are part of everyday life. They are breakfast before work, a quick stop between errands, a late-night meal with friends, and a reason to gather on a Sunday. They are also a source of immense pride for Southern California, where taquerias are woven into the fabric of every neighbourhood.
“Every time we have the opportunity to represent our brand outside of Los Angeles, it feels like a dream come true,” say Jorge and Victor. “We believe Tacos 1986 has a place in every major city in the world and we’re excited to bring a little bit of Tijuana to Hong Kong.”
Over three nights, guests can experience the dishes that have made Tacos 1986 a destination. Handmade corn tortillas are served in four styles: tacos, quesadillas, mulitas (two tortillas layered with cheese and filling), and vampiros (crispy tortillas topped with melted cheese), with a choice of Adobada (marinated pork), Carne Asada (grilled beef), Pollo Asado (grilled chicken), or Hongos (mushrooms).
The Adobada, Tacos 1986’s signature pork al pastor, is cooked on a traditional trompo and carved to order straight from the spit. Carne Asada brings fire-grilled marinated steak, Pollo Asado pairs juicy dark-meat chicken with the char of the open flame, while Hongos combines mushrooms with salsa macha for a rich, deeply savory vegan option.
In signature fashion, every order is served con todo with onions, cilantro, guacamole, and salsa, alongside a selection of house-made salsas ranging from Salsa Ranchera and Salsa Verde to the smoky Salsa Morita and fiery Salsa Macha. To drink, guests can cool down with traditional aguas frescas including Horchata, long grain basmati rice blended with cinnamon and milk, Jamaica, hibiscus tea served chill, and Limonada — lemonade, taqueria-style.
For three nights only, Taqueria Super Macho becomes a little slice of Tijuana, with handmade tortillas, fire-cooked meats and the hospitality that has made Tacos 1986 a destination on both sides of the border.
15 and 16 July: from 5pm; 17 July: 12-3pm, 5pm till late.
