Our Frontline Leaders’ Top Tunes

When you work in service, you wait for that one song to come on all night. Maybe it reminds you of a person. Or of home. Or of growing up. Or it depicts what you are going through in life. We asked our guys on the frontlines to share their favourite songs. Here are the ones that mean the most to them and why.

Joennee Tanjuakio, Buenos Aires Polo Club

Walk of Life by the Dire Straights

The intro and riff of this song give me a warm, happy feeling which I also see in the eyes of our guests. It reminds me of my teenage years when I was trying hard to teach myself guitar chords and to sing – without much success! The final two verses are about dedication and devotion – for all the troubles and strife in one’s life, there is just one song.

Miguel Martins, Motorino

Shoop by Salt-n-Pepa

This song is a little old for my generation but, crazy as it sounds, it reminds me of home because my brother would play it a lot when I was a kid. Several road trips and great memories were made with this tune as the soundtrack. Besides being a kick-ass song and a classic ’90s hip-hop hit, it has been on my personal playlist since I can remember.

Brian Ferguson – New Punjab Club

Nothing Without You by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

I do not understand the lyrics because it is all in Urdu, but I find it very calming, it makes you feel like you are looking over the hills in Pakistan – or something like that! I was singing the song once, and Asim heard. He said it was his favourite song as well because it makes him think of home. Which is weird because it makes me think of home too.

James Johnson – Ho Lee Fook

Humps for the Boulevard by Rodney O and Joe Cooley

This is a real vibey tune that I always listen out for as it signals that the night is starting to pick up and get a little rowdier, definitely a tune that gets the team going late into the night!

Axel Dsouza – Stazione Novella

We Are The Champions by Queen

This song reminds of being out and about when everyone has had a few drinks, and they are having a good time. People start to recognise the song during the twinkly piano intro, then when the guitars kick in, they go crazy for it! Always makes me think of good times.

Richard Corrigan – BELON

California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas

This one is nostalgic for me especially as when I spend winters in Hong Kong I always miss the cold snap and contrast of different seasons back home in London. Autumn and winter are my two favourite seasons so I do find myself feeling strangely nostalgic when this song comes on.

Jenna Prosser – Chôm Chôm

I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith

I love this song just for the pure listening pleasure But also because it is a reminder to live in the present and make the most of what you have right now.

Olivia Ng – Artemis & Apollo

Aah Dance by Fine Quality (feat. Cruz)

We always look forward to this song coming on at peak time during service. It is my favourite song from the playlist because it pumps up the team and makes everyone want to dance. It gives us an adrenaline boost to push through the night!

Ali Khalid – Burger Circus

Wonderful Life by Black

This plays at any time of the day at Burger Circus. It works with the fun, synth-pop vibes of the restaurant. The lyrics remind me what can be achieved in life and it makes me imagine I’m chilling on a beach with a beer.
