Drink Pink

It is probably the ultimate romantic cliche and possibly desperately uncool but still, it is hard not to smile when you have a glass of something pink and sparkly in your hand. We asked our sommeliers for their favourite pink wines to fall in love with this Valentine’s Day.

Arnaud at BELON

Gosset ‘Grand Millésime’ Brut Rosé Champagne, a revered pink from the Gosset estate which dates back to 1584. A strawberry-focused,  soft-pink champagne that is fruity but wonderfully well-rounded. It has a similar base to other Bruts, but also a natural freshness as it undergoes less of a fermentation process, which allows it to be less jammy on the palate. If you are looking for an elevated champagne experience, or just want to try something different this Valentine’s Day, then this is really a beautiful bottle.

Jansz Premium Rosé NV is my absolute favourite pink wine. A refreshing Tasmanian sparkling wine, Jansz Premium Rosé NV has beautiful wild strawberry flavours, enhanced by a crisp floral palate. It is a spectacular everyday wine, affordable and easy-drinking. What makes it particularly special? It is made within the same production methods as champagne, but is accessible and light. I like it most alongside a picnic spread of cheese, olives and cured meats – like this one from Stazione Novella.

Cristian at Associazione Chianti

I like to keep my bubbles for special occasions, although if you ask my girlfriend she will say that every day is Valentine’s Day. For bubbles, my favourite is a Franciacorta, which comes from the Province of Brescia and has acquired DOCG status, it is basically Italy’s answer to Champagne.  Ca’ del Bosco is one of the best Franciacorta makers in Italy, producing wines with a rich and intense profile. Annamaria Clementi Rosé, one of the top cuvée from the winery and named after its founder, is a magnificent wine, full of fruit, oak and yeast and is very complex, pairing beautifully with meaty dishes, quite unusual for a rosé. It is harmonious, subtle and balanced, made entirely from Pinot Nero grapes which give it its signature deep pink hue.

Johann at Carbone

I am a hopeless romantic so for Valentine’s Day, I would suggest a wonderful sweet wine to sip alongside some dark chocolate or rich desserts. I love Giacomo Bologna Braida DOCG Brachetto d’Acqui 2018, from Piedmont in Italy, one of the most acclaimed semi-sparkling (frizzante) sweet red wines. It has juicy red cherry and raspberry flavours and smooth mouthfeel, with a delightful sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity.

Kevin at BELON

If there is any day to indulge your romantic side and open a sparkling pink wine then it is Valentine’s Day. Champagne De Sousa Brut Rosé, from the area of Avize, is a biodynamic wine made from a distinct blend of 90% Chardonnay des Grauves and 10% Pinot Noir d’Ay.  What is so unusual is the high level of Chardonnay, which adds a vibrant finesse to the wine, balanced by the berry aromas of the Pinot Noir grapes. These bold red fruit scents display a beautiful mineral character, complemented by toasty, smoky flavours.
